When purchasing an engagement ring, many people are faced with an important choice- “Should I buy a platinum engagement ring or one made out of white gold?” The two metals, although both white in color, are rather different from each other. There are pros and cons to each side of the argument, therefore many people have a dilemma when it comes to this decision.
Platinum surpasses white gold in many areas. It is an highly durable metal and is much more resistant to scratching. Many people buy platinum since it feels much heavier and they feel they are acquiring “more” for their money. Platinum is also much more pure than white gold. Platinum is 95% pure while white gold can only be up to 75% pure. Therefore when you use platinum for your ring it gives the ring more shine than white gold would due to is purity. Platinum is also much more ductile than white gold, thereby much easier to use for custom engagement rings. On the other had, white gold also has its pros. White gold is much more moderately priced than platinum. Platinum can carry a $300 – $500 per ounce premium over gold . So by choosing white gold you would have more money to spend on the actual diamond instead of pouring all of your cash into the ring. In addition, white gold is much lighter than platinum, making it much more desirable among people who prefer light weight rings.
No matter how many pros something my have, it will forever have its fair share of set backs too. Platinum can be very expensive at times and might not be the worth the cost. The nickel contained in white gold causes an allergic reaction among 1/5 people in the world.. In addition, white gold (just like any other gold) is very sensitive to chlorine. Therefore, contact with chlorine can cause discoloration of white gold engagement rings.
Whether you choose white gold or platinum for your engagement ring (or any other kind of ring , for that matter), the end product will always be the same: a beautiful creation that expresses your love towards your partner.
